TIP: Chromatic movement is ALWAYS alphabetical. Once you know one chord type you the know them all simply by moving forward or backward alphabetically. The guitar has three basic chromatic chord systems that will move up and down the fretboard creating all the other chords. All you have to do is memorize each family and then move them up or down the fretboard to the proper fret and they become the same chord type with a new root name. These three families must be memorized both in content and chromatic movement and then you will be able to play all major and minor chords, all sharps and flats, 6th, 7th, 9th, and (sus)pended chords easily and in an orderly system. As you use these systems, you'll will find that you will be able to change from chord to chord more easily and in a closer pattern on the fretboard This makes your changes smoother and quicker which enhances the sound of your piece, and your ability to play in better time will be enhanced. You'll find that you will alternate between the three systems consistently. These systems are also the basis of learning to play chord solos, which utilize the melody notes found within and around the chromatic chord form. Print these systems and memorize each one. Then begin to substitute these chords for the more basic chords in songs that you already know. Again, this is the most important thing you'll ever learn on the guitar. Memorize these few chords and their chromatic movement and you will have the capacity to accompany literally thousands of songs. These systems are a giant step in becoming a quality guitarist. Other chords systems to follow will allow you to broaden the scope of these chord systems and include more dramatic chord movement, but these three systems will be the basis for each one of the new chord systems that you will advance to.
